Kinja'd!!!

I was a minute late for work this morning because I had a hard time opening a stuck sliding door in order to get out my ice scraper. Tonight it’s supposed to get down into the single digits and I don’t want a repeat of this tomorrow. I usually put up the sheet for freezing rain, but it should help with the frost.

I need to figure out a better place to keep my snow brush in my Mini. I would keep it in the trunk but the trunk seal has a nasty habit of collecting water and freezing which means that if you open the trunk when it's below freezing you have 50/50 odds of actually getting it to latch properly again. Right now I keep it behind my passenger seat but long doors and people who park too close make it way harder to reach than it should be. At times I kinda miss having rear doors even if I rarely used them.

My neighbors used to give me the weirdest looks for doing that with a beach towel.

But I never had to scrape my window

“You know what’s better than having to scrape some ice off the windshield? Having fabric frozen to it”

Nah, even loaded with ice it peels right off. Couldn’t be any easier.

Front passenger’s door was frozen shut last week. Driver’s lock was frozen. Through the magic of VW, I was able to unlock the car from the passenger lock, open the rear driver’s side door, reach forward to the center console and hit the central locking unlock button with my scraper, while grabbing the little up down locky bit with my other had to break the ice in the lock mechanism so the lock would turn and I could get in. Then I got in and realized the entire inside of the windshield was iced over (under?).

What if the windsheild is already wet when you put it on?

In all the years I’ve been doing this, with this same sheet, it hasn’t been a problem. I’ve put it down on a wet windshield when expecting an ice storm, and yes, it was almost a solid sheet of ice when I went to leave, but it came right off without sticking. I shook it out, getting rid of the chunks of ice (which were already broken from the removal process), folded it up and tucked it in the back of the car for another day. You can’t let it sit too long in that state or the possibility of mold exists, but I would just hang it up in the basement to dry or toss it in the dryer.

I believe you, I’ve just always been very skeptical of this, especially around here where it’s seemingly a perpetual freeze/thaw/rain/sleet/snow/subzero-temps cycle.

It’s more of an intermittent use thing. The moisture wouldn’t allow this to be done on a daily basis.
